THE
FOURTH ANNUAL
UK SAME-SEX SHOW DANCE TROPHY
Saturday
3rd October 2009
2PM-6PM (prior to Jacky's Jukebox social dance in the evening)
The Rivoli Ballroom, London
(350
Brockley Road, London SE4 2BY)
Welcome to our show dance website!
This year we are pleased to present our third annual UK Same-Sex Show Dance Trophy following last year's spectacular competition which offered a unqiue and outstanding selection of show dances from many top same-sex ballroom and Latin couples. This year we look forward to an ever better competition as the couples show off their "crowd pleasin" steps! And in the Strictly tradition, the audience helps decide who wins... so be ready to cheer for your favourite couple.

COMPETITION
GUIDELINES [Updated 25 August 2009]
All entries must be couples (2 dancers only).
Order
of Dancing
There will be no rehearsal for Show Dance entries prior to the competition.
The order of dancing will be drawn by ballot on the day of the competition.
There will not be more than two rounds in the competition. The competition organisers
may at their discretion dance all entries together or in separate heats. Only
one show dance entry per couple will be permitted.
Required Elements
Show Dance entries must be based upon and exhibit at least one (or more) recognised
ballroom, Latin or other syllabus partner dance (e.g. Waltz, Quickstep, Cha-Cha,
Jive, Argentine Tango, Salsa, etc). Elements from other dance forms, lifts,
drops and physical movement may be used to enrich and complete the choreography.
Entries which do not exhibit a significant element of a recognised partner dance
may be disqualified.
Music
Music must be supplied on Compact Disc (CD). The music must be on a single track
and is recommended to be between 2.15 and 3.30 minutes, however because many
couples prepared show dances for the Outgames in Copenhagen where the time limit
was longer, this year (2009) longer entries will be accepted.
Entry and Exit
Couples are requested to walk onto the floor within a period not to exceed fifteen
seconds. At the conclusion of the actual performance, the couples may take their
bows, and walk off the floor with a period not to exceed 30 seconds. For the
exit the couples can use music. The time length of the exit music is strictly
limited to the same 30 seconds. During entrance, performance and exit the couple
must be alone on the floor.
Marking System
For the final round,
marks will be given for:
| a) | Technical Merit |
| - The technical
quality of the dancing - Demonstration and use of standard Ballroom or Latin technique |
|
| b) | Artistic Impression |
| - Choreography
(is it used to express the music/theme to its fullest extent?) - Musicality (how well is the performance related to the music?) - Use of theme (choreography, performance style, choice of dress, music, etc). - Originality of the idea (are there clever and musically related ideas used in the choreography?) |
|
| c) | Entertainment Value |
| - Audience appeal/applause |
The
range of the marks must be from 1.0 up to 10.0 as the best mark in each caption.
There will be separate adjudicators for Technical Merit and Artistic Impression.
The Technical adjudicator will be a qualified ballroom judge and the Artistic
adjudicator will be a professional dance artist/choreographer. Entertainment
Value will be judged by an impartial panel based on audience response.
All three sets of marks will be added together and a placing allocated to each
couple, with the highest total receiving first place, etc. In the event of a
tie, the better of a) and b) combined will decide the result, and if a tie still
exists then the better of a) alone will decide the result.
The above marking system will apply to the Final Round only. If there is a preliminary
round, the Technical and Artistic adjudicators will select the required number
of couples considering the same principles as in the final (ie. by considering
technical merit and artistic impression). Entertainment value (c) will not be
applied to preliminary round selection.
The marks of the judges/panel will be final
